Keen to Compost AND Grow Your Own Kai – Even Without a Garden?
If you live in an apartment, townhouse, or flat with no garden – and have a balcony, patio, or concrete space – Pickled Compost are looking for 2 extra households to trial the Pickled Compost System and urban food growing for 6 months starting this Saturday 24th May until the end of October 2025.
✅ Live in a medium to high density dwelling?
✅ No garden? No problem! Got a balcony, patio, or concrete space?
✅ Want to grow kai in containers and reduce your food waste?
Thanks to support from Wellington City Council and He Puāwai Trust, you would be joining 8+ households in trialing a compact composting system that transforms all food scraps (yes, even meat + dairy) into nutrient-rich soil — perfect for growing kai in containers. You’ll learn how to ferment food scraps using Bokashi, create soil in a ‘soil factory,’ and grow your own herbs, greens, or veggies right at home!
- A soil factory to turn food scraps into rich compost
- Containers for growing kai – perfect for small spaces
- Two seasonal workshops (Winter + Spring) to learn how to grow and manage growing kai in your container gardens
This is a chance to:
- Reduce your food waste
- Learn how to bokashi compost and make nutrient rich soil
- Learn to grow your own kai—even without a garden
- Help shape a more sustainable future for Pōneke Wellington
- Be part of a pioneering project that could scale across the city
