Pickled Compost Bokashi Bin Trial - South Wairarapa

Join the 6-Month Bokashi Bin Trial for Businesses

With support from the South Wairarapa District Council, businesses in the region can trial 120L Bokashi bins for six months to divert food waste from landfill, reduce methane emissions, and contribute to local soil health.

Why Join the Trial?

  • Divert Waste from Landfill – Reduce your environmental impact by keeping food waste out of landfill.

  • Lower Emissions – Food waste in landfill produces methane, a powerful greenhouse gas. Bokashi composting helps break down food waste in an anaerobic environment (not methane producing), reducing emissions.

  • Improve Local Soil Health – Instead of waste, your food scraps become a valuable resource for soil enrichment locally.

  • Support a Circular Food System – Help close the loop by ensuring food waste is transformed into compost to grow more food.

How It Works

  • Businesses will receive 2-3x 120L Bokashi Wheelie Bins as well as a 20% discount off a Bokashi inoculant from Pickled Compost

  • Food waste is collected in the bin and layered with Bokashi inoculant, which ferments and pre-composts the scraps.

  • Full bins can be processed at monthly community composting sessions - see 'Compost Club' for details, or businesses / organisations can manage their own soil integration.

  • The trial runs from May to October 2025.

What’s Included?

  • Trial participants receive 2-3 120L Bokashi wheelie bins (on loan for six months).

  • 20% discount code to purchase Pickled Composting Flakes (limited to 6x Large 190g bags per trial participant)

  • Training and guidance on how to use the system.

  • Support with composting logistics and best practices.

What is Bokashi?

Bokashi is a Japanese term meaning ‘fermented organic waste.’ It’s a simple yet powerful method of ‘pickling’ food scraps to transform them into nutrient-rich compost.

Unlike traditional composting, Bokashi works in an airtight container using Pickled Composting Flakes—a special blend of beneficial microbes that ferment food scraps in an oxygen-free environment. This process prepares all types of food waste for soil decomposition—yes, even meat, dairy, cooked food, and citrus!

More information about why this matters and benefits of bokashi here.

What Does It Cost?

The trial is free to join, but an associated cost covers the supply of Bokashi inoculant, which is essential for the fermentation process. Businesses can purchase Bokashi flakes (at a 20% discount) from Pickled Compost: Pickled Composting Flakes.

If trial participants opt for their wheelie bins to be collected, there will be a charge of $20 per pick up, which includes a clean bin replacement.

Who Can Join?

This trial is ideal for businesses and organisations producing 20L or more of food waste per week. Spaces are limited, and conditions apply, so please enquire below.
